For the love of cooking, Abdul Hadi Bin Abdul Hafiz, a fresh graduate of Bachelor in Culinary Arts (BCA), is passionate to maintain his consistency in growing his burger business, 7H Burger. Every good ending doesn’t necessarily have a smooth start. Likewise, Hadi’s success in the Food & Beverages (F&B) industry now birthed from humble beginnings.

Hadi is the third among seven siblings, which he said had prepared him to be responsible and independent in making important decisions in life. He had always exhibited profound sense of responsibility through the multiple works he was committed to. Running errands, looking after his younger siblings, helping mom with house chores, working part-time while attending high school were once this young man’s daily tasks. He was juggling between many works at once. While having too much on his plate, Hadi had to do his schoolwork at his part-time jobs once. But, he was fired for doing that. It was then that I discovered my potential and interest in businesses.

“The start of my business was when I was being fired while doing my homework at work. That was when my mom encouraged me to start running my own business when I was only 16 years old. She saw my potential and passion for business and supported me in my endeavours within the industry. She is the reason I’m here today. I waited on until high school ended and as soon as that happened, I began the works to starting my own business,” he said.

Among the challenges faced by Hadi at the time was to manage his time as well as possible so that he could maintain the consistency of his learning and business. His life as a student and a businessman during the pandemic was pretty much limited, but he managed to get everything back on track with the help of his siblings.

Hadi's never-give-up attitude has helped him stay more committed to his daily routines as a student while also running a business; a quality he sees every successful person must possess.

"Every day, I get up at 6am to run errands. If the inventory is mostly depleted, I can't run the business.

“I rode to MSU in Shah Alam from KL every day for five and a half years to attend my classes. It was truly challenging for me, especially when I had to juggle between classes and my business. I had to manage my time very well,” he said.

Hadi began his academic career by studying at Giat Mara and completed Cooking and Restaurant Service course before enrolling to MSU's Diploma in Culinary Arts (DCA) and graduated in 2018. In May 2022, he graduated with Bachelor in Culinary Arts. He pursued a bachelor's degree in culinary arts at MSU because he believes the F&B industry will never fade away and can run a profitable business.

Hadi sold several types of snacks cooked by himself door-to-door while studying at MSU.

"The most orders I received from MSUrians in one day was up to 120 packs of food.

"I represented MSU in a cooking competition while I was a student. In a competition in Melaka, I received a silver medal; and in the Ramly Burger Battle, I received a bronze medal. That was one of my proudest achievements. Proud because it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said.

Hadi’s interest in the culinary forte was greatly inspired by his chefs at MSU who have taught him a lot during his undergraduate years.

His desire is for his business to penetrate the international markets. If anything, Hadi feels blessed and proud of his accomplishments so far that he had garnered through the investment of his relentless efforts.

Being a student while running a business is inevitably a difficult task that necessitates a high level of discipline.

"Don't give up because there are surely ups and downs in businesses. When you are at the bottom of your career, don't stop but keep moving confidently in what you doNobody can make it for us if we don't make it for ourselves,” he ended.
