The School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA) at Management and Science University (MSU) leads the MyO2: From Oil to Oxygen project, promoting and amplifying environmental sustainability by recycling used cooking oil.

The annual campaign, established in 2019, is spearheaded by students undertaking event management subject from the Bachelor in Culinary Arts (Hons), Bachelor in Patisseries Art (Hons), Bachelor in Event Management (Hons), Bachelor in Hospitality and Tourism Management (Hons), and Bachelor in Outdoor Recreation Management (Hons) programmes.

The core objective of the initiative is to recycle used cooking oils, which is consistent with the circular economy principle of extending the usability of resources through recycling and reusing them. The initiative reduces the need for virgin materials and minimises environmental pollution by converting waste into a valuable resource through the collection and recycling of used cooking oil. This initiative also serves to inform the public about the significance of proper oil disposal, the recycling process, and the reduction of oil waste.

MSU, through SHCA, collaborates with the community and industry partners to sell collected oil to finance the planting of trees and herbs at Sg. Kanching Waterfall & Recreation Forest. Each tree and herb that is planted is named after a contributing company by MSU in collaboration with Shah Alam City Council and Tourism Selangor Sdn Bhd, in accordance with SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 15 (Life on Land), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

For 2024, the MSU MyO2 programme ventured beyond the MSU community by expanding the campaign to industries and the local community through ongoing activities starting in August 2024. The local community involved in the used cooking oil collection includes PPR Lembah Subang 2, in collaboration with MSU and Kementerian Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan (KPKT). Through these activities, MSU collected 484 litres of used cooking oil.

Since 2019, the MyO2 programmes evolved in multiple approaches, such as the MyO2 Programme Reused Cooking Oil & Herbal Garden in 2019; MyO2 Rangers, Plants Fertilising at MSU and Taman Eko Rimba Sungai Kanching, Rawang in 2020; MSU Herbs Garden: Grass and Roots at Sg Kanching in 2022; and Re-planting & Maintaining Trees in 2023.

From its commencement in 2019 to December 2024, a total of 1,668 litres of oil had been collected, yielding a total revenue of RM 2,250 through the participation of 20 companies. Utilising the amassed funds, 85 trees and herbs have been planted.

The programme will proceed until 2025, with all funds raised from selling the collected oil to MBSA being used to purchase trees for tree-planting initiatives in the local community. This endeavour is designed to contribute to the development of a more environmentally conscious Shah Alam city by supplying oxygen.
