Exhibiting an era of collaboration between humans and machines is the fifth Industrial Revolution (IR). Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data analytics are synergistic advancements capable of precisely diagnosing, optimising healthcare delivery, and tailoring patient treatment plans.

Venturing into the realm of healthcare through the lens of digitalisation is the mission Management and Science University. The Medical and Health Science clusters forming the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS), the International Medical School (IMS), and the School of Pharmacy (SPH) at MSU made strides in navigating these advancements in the 22nd edition of the International Medical, Pharmaceutical, Cosmeceutical, and Health Science Symposium (iMPaCHS).

Anchored by the International Medical School, the second installment of the biannual programme embraced the theme Digitalisation in Healthcare: Challenges in Industrial Revolution (IR) 5.0.

MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid officiated the symposium, which also featured distinguished guests: Professor Dr. Abdul Jalil Ghazali, Senior Vice President Industrial Linkages & Entrepreneurship; Professor Dr. Mohamad Khairuddin Abdul Wahab, Dean of IMS; Associate Professor Dr. Sairah Abd Karim, Dean of FHLS; Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Fadli Mohd Asmani, Dean of SPH; and Professor Dr. Indang Ariati Ariffin, Vice President for Research & International Affairs.

In his officiating speech, the MSU President encouraged the budding researchers to be passionate change-makers, by attempting applicable and translatable research to combat potential setbacks in the healthcare domain.

“As we look into the future, there are four crucial areas in research to concentrate on: improving access, efficiency, and minimising cost through technological tools; extending precision medicines as they are here to stay; improving passion experiences to avoid unnecessary interventions; and transforming care delivery. These themes are relevant to our discussions today and can be beneficial to both our University and hospital [MSU Medical Centre],” said the MSU President.

Delivering the keynote addresses were Dr. Vivek Jason, Public Health Physician at the National Institute of Health, Ministry of Health Malaysia, and Coo Sheen, Chief Executive Officer of Popeye Marine Biotechnology Limited from Taiwan.

The symposium featured a total of 14 oral and 46 poster presentations, including e-Poster presentations by one Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) student and participants from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, one of the research institutes at the University of Lahore (Pakistan).

Bagging iMPaCHS 22nd’s Junainah Abdul Hamid Award was Jeyvisna Arumainathan from the Bachelor in Bioinformatics (Hons) programme at FHLS for her groundbreaking research titled Identification of Immune Response and RNA Network of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Muhammad Lutfi Fariz Fadly from the MBBS programme at IMS won Best e-Poster for Social Determinants of Lifelong Learning Participation Among Pre-elderly Population in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Best Oral Presenter were Nadia Aisyah Adam from the Bachelor in Medical Sciences (Hons) programme at IMS for Lumbar MRI Utilization as a Diagnostic Tool in Evaluating Low Back Pain; Boon Chun Yourt from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme at SPH for A Systemic Review Study: Treatment Outcome in Patient with Treatment-Resistant Major Depressive Disorder; and Genevieve Simboh Anak Umbar from the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) programme at FHLS for Therapeutic Potential of Alkaloid-Rich Mitragyna Speciosa Extract in MPTP-Induced Zebrafish Parkinson’s Disease Model.
