Suren Rajakumar’s journey as the Area Manager at 7-Eleven in Singapore reflects his ability to adapt and excel as an all-rounder. Starting his career immediately after completing his degree, Suren now oversees 15 stores across Singapore, demonstrating his dedication and versatility in managing people and operations.

“I completed my Diploma in Computer Forensic in 2016 and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Computer Forensic (Hons) in 2022,” Suren shared. “Although my background is in technology, I transitioned to the retail industry to explore new opportunities and grow my career in business.”

This transition allowed him to take on significant responsibilities, including supervising 15 store managers and guiding them in sales management while ensuring exceptional customer service. As Area Manager, his role extends beyond overseeing operations; Suren also tackles challenges like handling customer complaints about product quality or pricing and managing manpower during emergencies such as staff absences.

“In such situations, I step in to support my team because teamwork is essential,” he said. “Our goal is to provide value to customers, so they remain loyal.”

Suren credits his ability to lead effectively to the lessons he learned at MSU. “MSU taught me to be a well-rounded and holistic individual,” he explained. “We shouldn’t focus solely on one field but explore different platforms and environments.”

His dedication and leadership earned him the Best Manager Award during his first year at 7-Eleven. He was also honoured with the Singapore Retail Association’s EXSA Award (Excellent Service Award) for delivering outstanding customer experiences.

Beyond his professional achievements, Suren is passionate about giving back to the community. Under his leadership, his team engages in community service including providing food and essential items to orphanages. Donation boxes in 7-Eleven outlets across Singapore allow customers to contribute voluntarily while the company donates proceeds from a 5-cent charge on plastic bags to support orphanages.

“We strive to make a difference wherever we can,” he said.

For Suren, MSU played a crucial role in shaping his holistic approach to leadership. “During my time at MSU, I balanced academics with extracurricular activities,” he said. “As the President of Kelab Kembara in the SCD (Students & Career Development) department, I was trained to lead and represent the student council. These experiences taught me to think differently, multitask, and develop problem-solving skills that have been invaluable in transforming my life and excelling in my career.”

He encourages future graduates to adopt a mindset of continuous learning. “Always be open to learning and explore the knowledge around you,” he advised. “Apply what you learn to your journey and always strive for growth.”

“The experienced and knowledgeable lecturers, combined with the evolving campus, provide an ideal space for students to thrive,” said Suren while praising MSU’s supportive and dynamic environment.

Suren’s journey is a testament to the power of adaptability, teamwork, and holistic growth, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.
