KAMARUDDIN MOHD DARWI | BACHELOR IN EDUCATION (VISUAL ARTS) (HONOURS) | 2021

Kamaruddin Mohd Darwi (Cikgu Kamal) is a dedicated teacher deeply committed to his students. He strives to introduce them to new technologies and broaden their horizons, especially in rural settings.

“My journey began at MSU College with a Diploma in Graphic Design, followed by a Bachelor’s in Visual Art Education under the School of Education and Social Sciences,” he said. His time at Management and Science University (MSU) shaped his perspective on being both an educator and a societal role model, instilling values of independence and resilience.

Currently teaching at Sekolah Kebangsaan Felda Air Tawar 4 di Kota Tinggi, Johor, a rural school in a FELDA (Federal Land Development Authority) settlement, Kamaruddin embraces the challenges posed by limited facilities and the remote location.

“Teaching in a rural school is not a challenge but an enriching experience,” he explained, noting how it offers exposure to diverse cultures, such as the mix of Malay and Indian influences, and allows him to broaden his students’ perspectives.

Despite limited resources, he has taken the initiative to enhance the learning environment by using his bonuses to create a more conducive and comfortable classroom for his students.

Kamaruddin’s passion for teaching ignited during his practicum, where he taught design software to students and worked tirelessly to help them succeed.

“This experience inspired me to dedicate myself to teaching and supporting students, particularly those in challenging situations,” he said.

However, his journey has not been without hurdles. Travelling one hour to Kota Tinggi town is demanding, but he views it as an opportunity to grow. Additionally, navigating peer dynamics has required resilience and a steadfast focus on his goals.

He also added that limited access to digital tools and resources in rural areas also presents obstacles to achieving 21st-century educational goals, necessitating creative solutions to bridge these gaps. He even does acknowledge that AI implementation in schools is still in its early stages, with courses expected to be introduced in the next 20 to 25 years.

However, Kamaruddin is enthusiastic about integrating AI and technology into education. He highlights tools like Google Gemini, which enhance learning by combining visuals, sounds, and written content, making it easier for students to retain information. AI also assists teachers by streamlining lesson planning, student assessments, and content preparation.

“Prompting technology is still developing, and its information isn’t always accurate. Teachers play a critical role in verifying and refining content to ensure effective learning,” he emphasised.

He also advocates for a collaborative approach between parents and teachers to ensure a well-rounded education.

“Effective education requires strong communication and partnership between parents and teachers,” he said, citing the importance of tools like WhatsApp groups to address student needs and foster coordination.

Reflecting on his time at MSU, Kamaruddin credits the institution for shaping his character and preparing him for challenges in the workforce. “MSU taught us to think outside the box and adapt to unfamiliar situations,” he explained. He often recalls the wisdom of his lecturers and Tan Sri himself, who advised, “If you want to do something, do it sincerely. Don’t seek appreciation from others; instead, do it with genuine intent.”

This principle, he believes, underscores the importance of sincerity, which naturally shines through in one’s efforts and work.
