The School of Education and Social Sciences (SESS) marked a significant milestone by welcoming its largest cohort of students during the September 2024 Oath-taking ceremony. Representing SESS on this special occasion was Hala Alloush, a Syrian international student hailing from Kuwait.

Hala spent all eighteen years of her life in Kuwait, where she was born and raised, before coming to Malaysia. Her interest in Asian countries has always been strong. Although her first choice was China, she opted for Malaysia at her parents’ suggestion. Currently, her favourite subject is Asian Literature, thanks to the engaging discussions in class.

Hala compares her experience studying at MSU with her sister’s experience abroad, expressing gratitude for the enthusiastic and helpful lecturers she has encountered.

“The lecturers are flexible compared to others. They are strict when necessary but not excessively so. You can easily approach them, and they are always open to conversation,” Hala shared, reflecting on her positive experience at MSU.

Beyond her academic life, Hala finds joy in sports and music, which help her unwind and stay grounded. She practices Pilates and ballet, appreciating the grace and strength they require. A lover of music, she also plays the piano and violin, finding solace in the melodies she creates. As for her academic passions, linguistics has captured her interest—particularly Phonetics and Phonology, where the intricate art of transcribing excites her. With each lesson, she looks forward to unravelling the complexities of language, eager to dive deeper into the world of linguistics.

"The first week was tough, I will not lie," Hala admitted, reflecting on her early days at MSU. "Everything was overwhelming, and I honestly wanted to go back home. It was a whole new world with new responsibilities, especially since I was living alone for the first time. It wasn’t easy." However, things soon changed. "Orientation helped a lot—I made new friends, which made all the difference. MSU creates such a welcoming space for connecting with people. I have met so many amazing friends, both local and international, and that has been one of the best parts of my journey so far."

Hala quickly discovered that MSU offers much more than just academics. The vibrant classroom atmosphere, a perfect blend of learning and enjoyment, has become one of her favourite aspects of student life.

"At MSU, it’s not just about gaining knowledge," Hala shared with a smile. "You are having fun while you learn, and that is something special. No matter how much you think you know, there is always more to experience. MSU has truly exceeded my expectations in ways I never imagined."
