The event featured the thrilling Yee Sang toss, mesmerising Lion Dance acrobatics, and a spectacular Dragon Dance performance to bring an air of excitement and cultural appreciation to the university.
For many international students, this was a first-time experience and a chance to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and embrace the beauty of Malaysia’s multicultural celebrations. Here’s what they had to say about this unforgettable event.

Experiencing Chinese New Year for the first time was nothing short of incredible. The performances were captivating, and the atmosphere was vibrant. t felt like being part of something truly special. I had so much fun watching the traditional dances and taking in the festive energy all around me.
One of the things I love most about studying at MSU Malaysia is the safe and welcoming environment. It makes it easy to focus on studies while planning for the future. The staff here are super supportive, especially when it comes to academic transitions like subject transfers. They go the extra mile to make sure students have a smooth and stress-free experience.
Malaysia itself is a fantastic place for students. It’s safe, comfortable, and full of opportunities to explore new cultures. The freedom to travel and experience different traditions without any worries makes studying here even more rewarding.

This was my first time celebrating Chinese New Year in Malaysia, and I was completely enchanted by the experience. From the delicious festive food to the electrifying dragon and lion dance performances, everything was bursting with energy. It was such a joy to watch and be part of!
What made the celebration even more special was seeing students showcasing their talents in music and dance. It was inspiring to witness the creativity and passion of my fellow students. As a French student, it was fascinating to see how different cultures come together in Malaysia, creating something so unique and exciting.
One thing I’ve learned is that Malaysian students are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. They’re always open to conversation, making it easy to feel at home. If you’re an international student coming to Malaysia, be prepared for the air-conditioning. It can be seriously chilly indoors! Also, don’t be shy about exploring. The campus and the city have so much to offer, and the more you socialise and meet people, the more you’ll appreciate Malaysia’s rich and diverse culture.
Ruvimbo Michelle Masimba from Zimbabwe – Bachelor in Beauty and Hair Management (Hons)
This was my second time celebrating Chinese New Year, and I loved it even more than the first! It was so exciting to see how traditions are celebrated differently in Malaysia, with so much energy and enthusiasm. The performances, the decorations, and the overall spirit of the event made it an unforgettable experience.
I chose to study in Malaysia because I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and experience something new. MSU stood out to me because it was one of the few universities offering my degree, and I knew I had to grab the opportunity. So far, my experience here has been amazing. Malaysia is the perfect place for students who love exploring new cultures while earning a quality education.
Inyeong Kim from South Korea – Bachelor in Accounting and Finance (Hons)
Celebrating Chinese New Year in Malaysia was a fantastic experience. Before coming here, I had never seen a Lion Dance in real life, and I was blown away by the energy and precision of the performance. Learning about Chinese traditions, customs, and food in such an immersive way made me appreciate how rich and meaningful the culture truly is.
One of the things I love most about MSU is its international student community. It truly feels like a global hub, where students from Asia, Europe, and Africa come together, share their cultures, and learn from each other. I’ve made friends from all over the world, including fellow Koreans who are also studying here.
I chose Malaysia because English is widely spoken, making communication so much easier for international students. The country also has a diverse international community, with people from China, India, Saudi Arabia, and beyond. This has helped me not only adapt but also improve my English and communication skills just by interacting with different people every day.
Muhammad Uzair Zulkarnain from Malaysia – Diploma in Education (TESL)
Chinese New Year at MSU isn’t just about watching performances, it’s about experiencing the culture firsthand. International students don’t just observe the festivities, they’re encouraged to join in, celebrate with locals, and truly understand the significance of the traditions. It’s a great way to connect with people, learn something new, and most importantly, have fun!
Malaysia is an amazing country for students who love experiencing cultural diversity. Apart from Chinese New Year, there are so many other colourful celebrations throughout the year, including Hari Raya, Deepavali, Malaysia Day, and Merdeka (Independence Day). Each festival brings its unique traditions, flavours, and experiences, making student life here exciting and dynamic.
If there’s one thing I’d say to new students, it’s this: Make as many friends as possible! University is not just about studying, it’s about creating memories, learning from others, and growing as a person. Also, be kind to the people around you because you never know what friendships might form from a simple conversation. And most importantly, embrace every new experience. Whether it’s a festival, a cultural event, or just trying out new food, everything adds to your journey in Malaysia.
The Chinese New Year celebration at MSU was more than just an event, it was a cultural adventure that allowed students from across the globe to experience the beauty and richness of Chinese traditions in a truly immersive way.
