Malaysia’s 60th Independence Day is just around the corner and the patriotic spirit is in the air, as displayed by MSUrians in various Merdeka programs. With the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ flying high everywhere on the MSU campus grounds, MSUrians are so ready for 31st of August! We caught up with five MSUrians for insights into what being a Malaysian means to them:

Yassmein Khaled, Bachelor of Optometry (Hons)

“We have a lot of wonderful cultures from many different races in Malaysia and these cultures are one of the things that paint the pictures of our country. I am proud that we don’t let the differences divide us, instead we use them to bring us closer together”.

Navitta Karunakaran, Bachelor of Education (Hons)-TESL

“I am proud to be able to say that I am a Malaysian. It is my identity and my soul belongs to Malaysia. It is a great country and I am studying for the future of my country”.

Juraidy Bin Junaidi, Diploma in Medical Assistant

“Being a Malaysian means that we have the privilege to live in a peaceful country. There are a lot of things to be grateful for about this country, and I am indeed grateful to be its citizen. Malaysia is great”.

Yong Yoke Mun, Diploma in Management

“As a Malaysian, I have a duty to carry for my country and that is to make my country proud. Malaysia gives me the chance to be in a wonderful country and I have to repay this country by representing it everywhere I go and make Malaysia proud”.

Farah Imani, Bachelor of Education (Hons)-TESL

“Being a Malaysian makes me feel proud. We are a multiracial country, but we still live harmoniously in Malaysia. We are united and we help each other. It is our duty as Malaysians to make our country proud”

Happy Independence Day, Malaysia! Let’s keep working together for more global recognition for our country, MSUrians!
