Already doing his Master’s at such a young age, Onki Alexander is on a fast track in his academic journey. He came to Management and Science University (MSU) from his beloved home in Indonesia to pursue a Bachelor in Creative Multimediaand take one step closer to his dream. Having spent four years for his Bachelor here, Onki has MSU imprinted on his heart. He decided to stay and pursue his Master’s in Information and Technology at MSU.
That journey became more exciting when he was appointed President of the MSU Indonesian Society (MIS). Here’s his MSUrian story.
Why did you choose MSU
From an introduction that piqued my interest, I did a comparative research on MSU. I decided that the course offered at MSU will help me fulfill my goals. I chose MSU also because I wanted to experience the University’s global mobility opportunities and learn about other countries.
I spent 4 years here for my degree. When I finished, I felt like those years were not enough. I want to stay at MSU because MSU has helped me develop myself and I think I can go farther, which is why I decided to pursue my Master’s here as well.
What do you like about MSU
MSU is such a beautiful and convenient place to study at. I love how the buildings interconnect so moving from class to class becomes easy.
MSU also provides complete facilities for us, such as the The Hub (our foodcourt), the computer labs, and in-class learning facilities. All these help in learning and student life. I feel safe and comfortable here.
Tell us about your student life in MSU
We are always encouraged to become well-rounded graduates here. I get involved in as many activities I can, and maintain my grades at the same time. I started out by joining the Taekwondo club and ended up joining a few Taekwondo competitions when I was doing my Bachelor. I also joined the MSU Indonesian Society (MIS), which kept me pretty busy with activities. I was given the opportunity to become the Program Manager for Pentas Seni Indonesia MSU (PENSIM) in 2016, and it was a successful event. I was also the Coordinator for Communication and Information for MIS.
With my decision to progress to Master’s, I kept my membership. It’s a big honour to be appointed MIS President, and a huge responsibility which I will do my best to deliver.
Tell us what’s special about MIS
There are many special things about MIS but I guess the best thing about it is the feeling of home. Being far away from your family is tough, but MIS make up for it.
It is a privilege to see our club grow in number. We have a lot of activities planned for this year such as Nusantara Night, PENSIM 2.0, GOLDEN (debate competition) and Maulid Akbar in conjunction with Maulidur Rasul. We are determined to make each a success.
We are all also very proud of our club as just recently it was recognized by Persatuan Pelajar Indonesia Malaysia (PPIM), which links us to the Indonesian Embassy.
How do you manage your time
Being active in MIS whilst maintaining my CGPA keeps me pretty busy but I always try to balance my time. I always have a timetable to make sure my daily activities are organized and balanced. The key is early preparation and planning. Besides that, it is also important for you to figure out what your priority is.
My lecturers here also help me a lot. There are my mentors, who care about my grades as well as my personal development.
With all these, I’m proud to say I made the Dean’s List three times!
What has been the greatest experience for you as an MSUrian?
A lot of my experiences in MSU have been great. Knowing that my friends in MIS trust me enough to select me as their President is humbled me. I am also happy with all the medals I have won in Taekwondo tournaments.
I am proud of myself for being able to do all these without them affecting my results.
I guess, all in all, I am just happy to be growing and developing at MSU. This place has helped me so much, in my journey of shaping myself to become a better person.
What is your hope for the rest of your Master’s journey in MSU?
I hope to keep doing well both academically and co-curricular. I also hope to carry out my duty as MIS President well, and that my team members can work well with each other for the benefit of our club, MSU, and Indonesia.
Thank you for sharing your story, Onki. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
