Included in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) are the end of poverty in all its forms everywhere (Goal 1), food security and improved nutrition to end hunger (Goal 2), and reduced inequalities -- within, as well as among, countries (Goal 10).

Last December, culinary students of MSU College (MSUC) Kota Bharu spent a day visiting four members of the asnaf community in Kelantan.

Cultivating a care attitude and a willingness to help society’s in need, the MSUC Sentuhan Kasih Santuni Asnaf organized in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and the Kota Bharu Homehelp Unit simultaneously achieved two more of the UNSDGs: quality education (Goal 4) and partnerships strengthening the means of implementation to achieve the goals under mission (Goal 17).

A recently widowed father of seven who has had to leave his job to care for his children was among the four who received aid from the MSUC volunteers. Another was a man who has been suffering from a stroke for more than eight years now. Two other aid recipients have also been suffering from similarly debilitating illnesses; a ninety-year-old single mother and a woman with one leg less as a result of diabetes.

Activity director Harshinia Gunasegaran who is in her fifth semester on the Diploma in Culinary Arts programme at MSU College Kota Bharu expressed happiness at being able to help.

It was a most beautiful learning experience that we could share with our friends. Our donation was not much yet it raised a lot of smiles and brought cheer all around,” she said.

The community engagement exploration activity was co-directed by Diploma in Culinary Arts student Muhamad Aiman Nurhakim Shamsudin and Bachelor in Culinary Arts student Nurul Wafiqah Rosli.

They were accompanied by the Kota Bharu Social Welfare Office Community Coordinator, JKM Kelantan’s Homehelp Unit Chief, and JKM’s Kota Bharu Children Consultation Deputy Chairman.
