Fashion, historically, is important. Cyclical in its course, threading the past to the present, fashion as a vibrant player in social culture is relevant to society’s well-being. Feeling the magnitude of his responsibility as MSU’s new Honorary Doctor of Fashion is Dr Hitoshi Tajima.

The president of Ueda College of Fashion in Osaka, Japan was conferred the Doctor of Philosophy (Fashion) at the 30th Convocation Ceremony of Management and Science University (MSU).

Delivering his acceptance fully in Japanese at the third of the four-session graduation event, Dr Tajima expressed his gratitude for the honour.

“It is a sobering feeling, the magnitude of this responsibility; but I pledge to continue making sincere efforts in research, contribute to the development of fashion education in the region, and work even harder to nurture human resource who will lead the 21st century and be true to the name of the University.”

Cooperation between Ueda and the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA) of Management and Science University extends beyond the physical classroom.

Since 2018, MSU students on the Bachelor in Fashion Design with Marketing (Hons) programme have been participating in the Ueda Gakuen Collection Fashion Show held annually at the Grand Front Osaka Convention Center in Japan; thanks in a large part to Dr Tajima, who is a current Executive Board Member of Ueda Gakuen Educational Institute.

“The fashion initiatives by students from both schools have now become a big wave and do not stop. It is an outpouring of enthusiasm for fashion, a participation full of expressive exchanges that transcend cultural and religious barriers,” continued the icon, who was once the Senior Managing Director to Fuji Co. Ltd (Japan) dealing with premium fashion brands such as Christian Dior and Lanvin.

Dr Hitoshi Tajima spent much of his professional life working in the fashion industry throughout the eighties and the nineties; overseeing merchandising and branding as Director General to World Co. Ltd (Japan), as well as Human Capital Development, Creative Merchandising, and Communication Design as CEO and President to DNA Co. Ltd (Japan).

He has led Ueda College of Fashion as President since 2015, having served as Secretary General from 2014 to 2016.

A Visiting Professor to both MSU and his alma mater Osaka University of Arts since 2017, to China’s Dalian Polytechnic University since 2018, and to Taiwan’s Ling Tung University until 2019, the MSU Honorary Doctorate in Fashion is also Visiting Research Fellow to Ritsumeiken University, Japan and a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from City University, Mongolia.
