The increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) heeds the call for implementation of preventative strategies, innovations in treatment modalities, and the incorporation of technology in healthcare to enhance disease management and achieve improved outcomes.
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) and the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) at Management and Science University (MSU) held the first edition of the International Conferences on Cardiovascular and Quality of Life (iConCiQ) on July 24. The conference was organised in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Premier Integrated Labs as one of the main sponsoring entities.
The soft launch of iConCiQ was conducted during the MSU Health Science Week 2023 in observance of the World Heart Day 2023.
iConCiQ is the premier interdisciplinary platform for students, researchers, industrial practitioners, and academicians to present and discuss the most recent innovation, trends, and concerns, as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted from the perspectives of cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular technology, quality of life, and others.
Highlighting Cardiovascular Wellness: Nurturing Hearts, Enriching Lives as its central theme, the first edition of iConCiQ featured 23 presentations comprising 11 oral presenters, eight poster presenters, and four e-poster presenters. They represented MSU (10), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (7), Universitas Airlangga Surabaya (2), Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (1), Institute Medical Research at National Institute of Health (1), and Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School (1).
Over 150 participants from various international institutions joined the conference, namely: Singapore Clinical Research Institute; Universitas Airlangga Surabaya, Health Polytechnic of Surakarta, Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Panti Kosala, Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Telegorejo Semarang, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, and Universitas Sumatera Utara in Indonesia; Mohamad Bin Khalifa Cardiac Centre in Bahrain; Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre in Brunei; and Our Lady of Fatima University in the Philippines.
“This conference is particularly crucial given that CVD is the primary cause of mortality in all states of Malaysia. Healthcare is one of the most difficult ecosystems in any country, apart from education. Therefore, we aim to establish and strengthen the medical and health science cluster through the use of such a platform,” said MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shuki Ab Yajid in the officiating ceremony.
The inaugural plenary address, "Endothelial Cell Breakthroughs: Advancing Cardiovascular Science," was delivered by Dr. Nur Najmi Mohamad Anuar, a senior lecturer and researcher at the Centre for Toxicology & Health Risk Studies (CORE) in the Programme of Biomedical Science at the Faculty of Health Sciences (UKM). Associate Professor Dr. Satirah Zainalabidin, also affiliated with CORE at UKM, led the second plenary session, undertaking the discourse on "Cardiac Structural Changes Via Antioxidant Status in Ovariectomised Rats with Induced Myocardial Injury." Professor Dr. Sazzli Sahlan Kasim, a certified trainer in cardiology registered with the National Specialist Register (NSR), addressed the “Advancement of Artificial Intelligence in Cardiovascular Disease.”
The inaugural keynote pertinent to "Challenges of the Healthcare System: Disease Burden" was later delivered by Professor Datuk Dr. Hj Rohaizat Hj Yon, a visiting professor at the International Medical School (IMS) and member of the Board of Governors at MSU.
Associate Professor Dr. Mark Chan, an interventional cardiologist, delivered the second keynote address titled “Current Advancement in Treatment in Cardiovascular Disease.”
Stephanie Tamil Many from the Bachelor in Biomedical Sciences (Hons) programme earned the Best Oral Presenter award in the first iConCiq for her critical review on “The Effects of Red Sea Marne Sponge (Xestospongia testudinaria) on Hemodynamic and Histopathological in Heart Failure Rats.”
Stephanie, a member of the Student Representative Council for the term 2023/2024, was in the final days of her internship when her supervisor encouraged her to participate in this conference. "I dedicated extensive hours studying and reviewing this topic in order to adequately prepare for this conference." I underperformed during my research project viva a few months ago because of my anxiety. When my supervisor approached me about this conference, I reminded myself that the place where you stumble is precisely where you can rise again," she expressed. In addition, Stephanie conveyed her intention to pursue Master's degree at MSU.
Lew Leong Chen from UKM for “Efficacy of Diabetes-Specific Meal Replacement on Cardiovascular Risk Factors among Overweight or Obese Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients” and Mihir Gandhi from the National University of Singapore for “Validation of PedsQLTM (Paediatric Quality of LifeTM) Generic Core and Cardiac Module for Measuring Health-Related Quality of Life in Multi-Ethnic Asian Children and Adolescents with Heart Diseases” won the second and third places, respectively.
“Histology Observation, Demographic Study and Expression of Matrix Metalloproteinase in Autopsy Samples of Sudden Death Cases from Hospital Canselor Tunku Muhriz” by Nur Syahidah Nor Hisam (UKM); “Knowledge and Awareness of Automated External Defibrillator Usage among Private University Students in Shah Alam, Selangor" by Sarina Sariman (MSU); and “Impact of Intermittent Fasting on Energy and Macronutrient Intake in Adults with Overweight and Obesity” by Farah Huda Mohkiar (MOH) were the top 3 to receive the Best Poster Presentation.
Norman Nillson Norrisin from the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme bagged the Best E-Poster for his presentation titled “Social Determinants of Quality of Life among Population Aged 60–74 Years Old in Peninsular Malaysia.”
iConCiQ 2024 also featured the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with five industry partners: Aafiyat Holding, the National Heart Institute, WiPro UNZA, the National Kidney Foundation, and Physiomobile
