Management and Science University (MSU) has held its first physical Pharmacy Oath-Taking and White-Coat Ceremony since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020.

Organized by the MSU School of Pharmacy (SPH) in the run-up to the 29th Convocation Ceremony of Management and Science University (MSU), it saw young pharmacists in training taking their Pharmacist’s Oath at the MSU Pharmacy Oath-Taking and White-Coat Ceremony 2022.

Over a hundred from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme and six from the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Technology (Hons) programme took part in the May ceremony; with 29 from the 2018 cohort, 25 from 2019, 28 from 2020, 31 from 2021, and 2 from this year’s cohort.

Among them is Year-3 student Noreen Hatem Abdelghafar Shaban who hails from Egypt.

“The white coat symbolizes my commitment to serving humanity and the opportunity I have to make real change in this world as a future pharmacist. Even though the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme is tough, we are surrounded by friends, mentors, and faculty lecturers who see our potential and support us to ensure that we succeed.

“My favourite courses on the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme are mostly industrial. In Pharmacology, particularly, I thrive in Physical Pharmacy. I love developing different dosage forms and learning all about the mechanics of pharmacology. The lab work and scientific exploration drive my passion for a career in the pharmaceutical field.”

First-years Nada Emad and Amira Emad Mohamed Samir Gouda are in their second semester on the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme.

“The oath-taking and white-coat ceremony has motivated me to continue on in the path of professionalism and honour,” says Nada. “This has been my first physical semester; before, it was all online. I’m really enjoying courses such as Pharmacy Practice, and I had so much fun during the Public Health Campaign which we conducted on campus – my most memorable learning experience so far because I had more time to get to know my batch mates.”

Responsibility, ethics, and altruism are at the core of the pledge that makes up a Pharmacist’s Oath.

Guiding pharmacists in how they should conduct themselves in pharmacy practice, the oath of a pharmacist pledges consideration of humanity’s welfare as well as relief of suffering as primary concerns; by applying knowledge, experience, and skills to the best of a pharmacist’s ability in assuring optimal outcomes for the patient, and respecting as well as protecting all personal and health information entrusted.

Signaling the start of future pharmacists’ education and training, the Pharmacist Oath-Taking and White-Coat Ceremony of the MSU School of Pharmacy (SPH) usually takes place once a year.

Intakes to the Management and Science University (MSU) School of Pharmacy (SPH) comprise one for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme, two for the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Technology (Hons) programme, and two for the Bachelor in Traditional Chinese Medicine (Hons) programme annually.
