MSU Foundation, also known as Yayasan MSU (YMSU) will be funding expenses for surgeries, patient care, and treatment at MSUMC under the Healthcare Equity for Affordable and Rapid Treatment (H.E.A.R.T.). Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad launched the project at Management and Science University.
YSMU, in addition, will be assisting MSU’s community outreach programmes and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-oriented projects, including but not limited to the MSU Embracing Community Healthcare Project (ECHO) for aborigines, orphanages, urban poor, refugees, and elderly by the International Medical School; SmartMed, an international SDG project emphasising reducing wastage of medicine, improving patients compliance and quality of life, as well as fostering patients' disease and medication management by the School of Pharmacy; and blood donation, community services, first aid demonstrations, health and hygiene outreach, and self-screening for HPV by the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS).
Following the Memorandum of Agreement between MSUMC and the Ministry of Health on March 18, 2024, MSUMC is now becoming a major hub, serving as a central hospital and buffer area, under the H.E.A.R.T. project.
The project focuses on surgical procedures and treatments for patients chosen by Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (Klang), Hospital Shah Alam, and Hospital Sultan Idris Shah (Serdang). These patients are from lower-income groups (B40 and M40) and will be monitored and sent to a special department at MSUMC called Public Wings. The expenses for medical procedures such as inguinal hernia repair and laparoscopic cholecystectomy will be sponsored by YMSU in full.
“This new partnership between the Ministry of Health (MOH) and private hospitals represents a big step forward for Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). By bringing MOH services to private facilities, the initiative will increase access to healthcare and support the growth of the private healthcare industry,” remarked the minister during the launching ceremony.
Taking place at the Chancellor Hall of the University, Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Yajid, President of MSU and Founder of MSUMC; Professor Puan Sri Datuk Dr. Junainah Abd Hamid, Vice Chancellor of MSU; Dato Indera Dr. Nor Azimi Yunus, Deputy Director of Health (Medical) (MOH); Dato’ Dr. Azman Yacob, Director of Medical Development Division (MOH); Dr. Ummi Kalthom Shamsudin, Selangor State Health Director; officials from MOH; senior management team of MSU and MSUMC; and over 1,000 students from IMS, FHLS, and SPH also joined the inauguration.
In his speech, the MSU President highlighted that the H.E.A.R.T. initiative steers to serve 50 patients each month. This will ensure that lower-income groups receive advanced and up-to-date medical care. He stated that 16 surgeries have been performed since the project began in March. Ongoingly, the priority is to streamline processes and significantly mitigate wait times, particularly for minor procedures that previously had waits of up to nine months.
Receiving mock H.E.A.R.T. Project Volunteer Card representatives from FHLS and IMS, led by Wardena Ningseh Abd Malek of Bachelor in Cardiovascular Technology (Hons), the President of the MSU Student Representative Council, and Muhamad Azree Mohd Azman of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), the President of the International Medical School Student Association.
There was a symbolic exchange of gifts and a group photo to mark the launch of the project. This ceremony highlighted the mutual respect and collaborative spirit between the participating organisations.
Along with the opening ceremony, the minister stopped by booths set up by FHLS, IMS, and SPH. The visit concluded with a comprehensive tour of MSUMC, comprising crucial facilities in the Dialysis Department and the Private Wing on Level 14.
