Management and Science University (MSU) has created a new Malaysia record with the UNSDG-inspired MSU International Songket Run 2019.

With 4,868 people participating, the event went into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) as the Largest Participation in a Songket Running Event.

Receiving the MBR certificate was MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, witnessed by Selangor Royals' HRH Tengku Permasuri Norashikin who flagged off the runners as the day dawned in the early hours of Saturday.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) featured largely in the 2nd edition of the MSU International Songket Run. The 5km workout for cardiovascular health raised Shah Alam’s profile as a city promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Whilst the running and the walking are a nod to UNSDG’s Goal 3 for Health and Well-being, keeping the city air clean keeps Goal 11 for Sustainable Cities and Communities in sight. Building an effective, accountable institution able to make a difference is UNSDG’s Goal 16 for Strong Institutions, and forming collaborative Partnerships to achieve the goal is UNSDG’s 17th.

Songket as a centerpiece of the run engaged the attention of the community at large, with participants turning up from as far as the Philippines. A world-class cultural heritage whose tradition needs to be preserved for the future, songket’s intricate weave and unique motif were on display aplenty at the MSU International Songket Run 2.0; worn in various fashion or as accessories.

The Songket Run’s youngest participant was not quite two years old, whilst the most senior was 70.

Special prizes were also presented for the Most Creative Dressing in the Individual and Family categories, as well as the Largest Group Participation in the MSU, Industry, and International categories.

Lucky draws, a Grand Prize, commemorative finisher medals, and entertainment provided by MSU’s own Performing Arts and Culture Club made for a most enjoyable day at the MSU International Songket Run 2019.

The 36th MBR event for MSU is preceded by another songket-related one in 2018 – MSU’s 34th MBR – which is The Largest Number of People Wearing or Having Songket Elements as Part of Their Dressing, with 4,878 participants.
