The 2020 Malaysia Census Key Findings Report by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) was launched by the Prime Minister at Management and Science University (MSU) on February 14, 2022.

 

 

“The need for data in this era of information mastery has become crucial to mainstreaming sustainable development in the country as well as strengthening our competitiveness at the international level,” remarked the Prime Minister in his keynote address.

 

Presenting such findings among which is 1.7 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) in 10 years for Malaysia’s 32.4 million people, the Malaysia Population and Housing Census 2020 is set to map the way to a more sustainable future for the nation.

 

Bumiputeras make up 69.4 percent of the Malaysia population, followed by the Chinese and the Indians respectively with 23.2 and 6.7 percent, and other ethnicities at 0.7 percent.

 

Excepting the Federal State of Putrajaya, where women outnumber men by four for every 96 men, the male-to-female ratio of the population is 110 men to 100 women.

 

Over six percent are aged 65 years or above. Over 69 percent are of working age (15-64 years old), and 24 percent are below 14 years of age.

 

Those 60 years old and above numbered 3.4 million (10.5 percent) in the Malaysia Census 2020, versus 2.2 million (8 percent) in the Malaysia Census 2010.

 

Manufacturing replaced agriculture as Malaysia’s main contributor to the GDP in the 1980s; it is now being replaced in the millennium era by the service industry.

 

Present to welcome the Prime Minister, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Economic Affairs, and the Chief Statistician Malaysia was MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.
