Management and Science University (MSU) has held yet another virtual award ceremony; this time for its Dean’s List students from the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA).

Presenting the Dean’s List Award early June to a total of 801 students from the February and September 2019 intakes, the ceremony had famed fashion figure Bon Harun Zainal, a.k.a. The General of The Style Soldiers, as guest speaker.

Founder of MBDA (Malaysia Bumiputra Designers Association), Bon, whose work can be seen at events such as KL International Fashion Week, Malaysia International Fashion Week, Stylo, and Islamic Fashion Festival, told the students that it is important to put their name out there and to hold on to it while they were on their way to making it in fashion on that name.

“And when you’ve arrived, remember that imitation can only mean a compliment to you. Fashion is all passion and talent. Imitators, who have none of those, will eventually tire of copying what you do,” he said.

The couturier whose first name sounds similar to that of a similarly impeccably dressed fictional British secret agent credits his sense of style to an enduring interest in fashion that started in primary school and had been inherited from his late grandmother. Being passionate about fashion means living and breathing it, said Bon, who studied fashion marketing and merchandising in Los Angeles and worked in Beverly Hills under the tutelage of Rick Pallack – dresser to celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone and Michael Jackson. He counts working with Ralph Lauren among his other experiences in California.

Having spent five years in the United States, he returned to Malaysia and worked his way up from window dresser to marketing executive and later on to corporate marketing director at Spark Manshop before starting his own business offering marketing and image consultancy.

Bon explained that he had wanted comprehensive knowledge on all things related to fashion when he decided to leave for the US after high school. The sewing techniques, pattern making, designing, advertising, promotion, accounting, and retail management that he sought to learn in America are all standard syllabus on the Bachelor in Fashion Design with Marketing (Hons) programme at MSU.

Fashion design is also offered at Management and Science University (MSU) as part-time diploma, Bachelor’s degree, and Master’s degree programmes on blended face-to-face with online mode. Makeup Skill is offered as a short course at MSU Learning Centre in KL Sentral, whilst Marketing Management is offered as a BA (Hons) professional programme with Anglia Ruskin University at MSU College Penang. Bachelor in International Business (Hons) is another professional programme offered at MSU College Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu, and Penang in collaboration with Management and Science University (MSU).

In parting, Bon Zainal encouraged lifelong learning to all the Dean’s List Award recipients.

“Treat the award as your ticket to the next level of excellence. This digital age, knowledge is just a click away at your fingertip. Explore new territories. Never stop learning.”

The two-session SHCA Dean’s List Award 2021 concluded with a performance by Bachelor in Music Technology (Hons) student Iman Safira Achdiat, who did a video cover of Katy Perry's 'Roar'.
