Management and Science University (MSU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) in Kuala Lumpur.

The signing of the MoU took place in conjunction with ASWARA’s 15th Convocation Ceremony.

Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali received the Honorary Doctorate of Creative Arts (Promotion of Creative Arts).

Honorary Doctorate of Creative Arts (Cultural Art Development) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad addressed the importance of keeping heritage art alive.

Art and culture are core to a nation’s identity; manifestations of civilization, he said. Early civilizations were built on cultural art and prospered. Buildings and structures bear the stamp of cultural identity. The more intricate a piece of art, the higher its perceived value and association with the particular people that created it. Culture encompasses social values, and social values influence social behaviour.

Heritage for the future

The Prime Minister of Malaysia also spoke on the roles of art students and creative technology. In contributing to the nation’s GDP, art students are as capable as their peers in science, technology, and mathematics. The creative industry is a fast-developing sector in Malaysia. Up to end March 2019, there were 345 companies with Malaysia Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status under the Creative Content and Technology Cluster. As of 2018, they recorded 7.69 billion Ringgit in sales revenue and 1.40 billion Ringgit in export sales, achieved through a total of 11,471 jobs.

The MSU-ASWARA collaboration aims to take the production of creative contents and products farther and higher, with potential areas of common interest including music, animation and multimedia, and visual communication.
