Management and Science University (MSU) celebrated World Pharmacists Day 2019 together with the Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.

Held at the MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC) concourse, the event was officiated by MSU President, Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

“Pharmacists at MSU are part of a big healthcare ecosystem; one that intends to expand the pharmacist’s role into traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) education and practice. We are supporting research into halal TCM and looking into making TCM part and parcel of the whole integrated healthcare provider network in Malaysia, with MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC) as a core component and a role model for inter-professional education (IPE) and practice (IPP). And the pharmacist’s oath that our beginning students of pharmacy are taking today just jives with our objective of delivering the best in healthcare.

“Pink October is another cause close to our Caring, Healing, Educating objectives. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Malaysia, according to the Ministry of Health; and breast cancer is the most common type among women. About 57 percent cases are treatable and operable as they are in stages 1 and 2. By celebrating the month for its awareness, we hope to raise concern among our students, our staff, and the public at large about the importance of early detection.”

Observed usually on the 25th of September, with the aim of showcasing pharmacists and their positive effect on health, World Pharmacists Day is coordinated by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP – Federation Internationale Pharmaceutique). There are four million pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, and pharmacy educators around the world in 2019 according to the FIP. Inspirational work that pharmacists do ranges from providing telemedicine service to identifying depression. Today, more than ever, pharmacists are responsible in ensuring that when a patient uses a medicine, it shall not cause harm.

World Pharmacists Day themes best sum up the role of pharmacists. These range from ‘Simplifying your medicine use no matter how complex’ in 2013 to ‘Your Medicine Expert’ in 2018. ‘Safe and effective medicines for all’ is the World Pharmacists Day theme this year.
