The fast pace of today’s news cycle makes discerning fact from fiction difficult, especially as concerns the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, critical thinking skills – the abilities and competencies in data analysis to separate fact from fiction – are essential. Teaching information literacy is the annual National Infohunt Challenge by Management and Science University (MSU).

Organized by the MSU Library and Resource Centre (LRC) with support by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MoE), the MoE Educational Resources and Technology Division, the Educational Resources and Technology Sector (SSTP), and Library and Media Teachers (GPM), the MSU National Infohunt Challenge took to Zoom and Meet this year for the first time in its 19-year history.

Over thirty-eight thousand high-school students had participated in the MSU National Infohunt Challenge since the programme’s inception in 2003. Thirty schools had passed the preliminary round last year before postponement of the national round as the pandemic broke and Malaysia went into lockdown early March 2020.

MSU National Virtual Infohunt Challenge 2021 counted 3,183 preliminary participations between May and July. Five hundred and eighty-eight who made it to the national finals represented 49 schools from 10 states.

SSTP Selangor led with 28 schools; followed by the SSTPs of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, respectively with 2 and 3. Melaka and Negeri Sembilan presented three qualifiers each, whilst the states of Pahang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Johor fielded two each. Thirteen schools joined the newcomers list, as did Johor’s participation.

SMK Subang Bestari from Selangor emerged the NVIC 2021 Champion. The winners received RM30,000 in scholarship, RM2,000 in cash, a medal, a certificate, and a trophy. Five awards each were presented in the NVIC overall championship category and in the new Creative Digital Poster category.

Creative Teaser and Creative Video presented three awards each. Twenty-nine prizes were presented in the MSU NVIC 2021 Outstanding Award category, with thirteen in the GPM category and sixteen in the Leadership category.

Juries serving on the ‘Malaysia Merdeka COVID’ themed competition in the Creative Teaser, Creative Video, and Digital Poster award categories comprised teams from MSU Media and Strategic Communication (MSC), the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering (FISE), and the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA).

MSU National Virtual Infohunt Challenge (NVIC) 2021 concluded with MSU Foundation (YMSU) receiving a three-thousand Ringgit contribution from MSU Library and Resource Centre (LRC), who presented the cheque to YMSU Vice-President Dato’ Rosli Yusof.
