Syalini Sridharan’s passion for fashion led her to found Ihana, a clothing line for women of unique silhouettes.

Meaning 'beautiful' in Finnish, it is Syalini’s perspective on how ladies should doll up and feel confident, unlimited by shape or size.

The student of Diploma in Entrepreneurship at the Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP) of Management and Science University (MSU) started designing and sewing for customers in 2016.

“It provided me with a source of income while applying for jobs,” she said.

Though the business idea came about after receiving a fantastic amount of orders from family members and close friends, it was her father who encouraged Syalini to pursue something that she clearly loved doing. Many dresses later, her sweet moment came when she got the opportunity to design for the Miss Grand Selangor 2019, where her evening gown was worn by one of the top ten finalists.

Despite her apparent success and talent, most of the time it is still a trial-and-error situation for Syalini.

“One significant challenge I face is dealing with fussy or arrogant customers. But they are the reason I am in business. I take it as a push to do better and venture into the unknown.”

And she has MSU behind her. With guidance and support from the MSU Jumpstart programme, Syalini has been developing important business skills such as making strategic decisions and enhancing her communication skills, tutored by both academics and business mentors.

The applied entrepreneurship programme providing assistance and coaching to MSUpreneurs in the MSU Entrepreneurship Ecosystem was established by the MSU Leadership and Entrepreneurship Advancement (LEAD) Institute.

With aims to develop holistic, balanced, well-rounded entrepreneurial graduates, Jumpstart helps ensure business sustainability throughout the cycle of ideation, formation, growth, and maturity. Recipients of the Jumpstart revolving fund are also guided in risk management and coping with challenges.

Quoting her favourite famous designer Vera Wang, Syalini has this to say about her success.

“When you have a passion for something you tend to be better at it and you work harder for it, too.”

MSU Bachelor in Entrepreneurship (Honours)

MSU Foundation in Business

MSU Master in Business Administration

MSU Doctor of Philosophy (Management/Business)
