Leadership is a second language in MSUrian Goh Wen Jian. The Convo-26 best graduate who received the Mohd Shukri Yajid Outstanding Award names the University president as his role model, and recalls the Oath-Taking Ceremony that started it all.

“Professor Tan Sri President said that to be successful is easy but to be well-rounded is difficult. I took it as a challenge to myself, my booster pill every day.”

From that point of his induction into Foundation (Biological Science / Health Science), Goh went on to progress to Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Honours). At his Class of 2020 convocation, the quadrilingual alumnus of MSU International Medical School (IMS) whose mother tongue is Chinese delivered two valedictories in three languages.

His career ambition being the medical profession, the former president of the MSU Student Representative Council (SRC) had wellbeing firmly in focus.

“Campus election entrusted us with the responsibility of representation for our fellow students. Being their voice, we had to work hard in ensuring student welfare. Issues had to be resolved practically and fast. In this regard, the harmonious environment at MSU really helped. Discussions with the University’s upper management took place at least once every semester.”

That particular focus became even more apparent when he was elected Deputy Chair of the National Student Council 2019.

“Participating in parliamentary debate matured me in national issues concerning students all over Malaysia. The opportunity took me up another level in my journey learning the ropes of leadership.”

Before his presidency of the SRC, the outdoor-active Goh had been the SRC’s Sports and Recreation Exco. He attests that balancing the academic with the co-curricular will benefit future careers. He has hiked as far up and away as the Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal, and professes enjoyment of solo night-hiking as a way to connect with his inner self. People-skills complement academic excellence and contribute to your employability, he says. Non-academic activities developed his soft skills, prepared him for the working world.

Now an Assistant Manager at MSU’s Global Affairs Department, Goh also brings with him the experience of international exposures gained through MSU’s Global Leadership Programme (GLP). He proffers setting priorities as his time-management tip.

“To excel, do not limit your capabilities. Trust yourself and be confident about it. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and seek more. Be brave in taking chances. Positivity combined with willpower shall lead you to great things.”
