She came to Management and Science University (MSU) armed with ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels in Science, and also a Bruneian student loan convertible to a full scholarship – if she graduates with First Class Honours. The ‘if’ is looking more like ‘when’, with her having made the Dean’s and President’s lists five times and twice, respectively. Now interning with e-Wallet service provider DahPay (M) Sdn Bhd in Bangsar, Bachelor in Computer Forensic (Honours) student Ampuan Siti Nurin Syahirah Ampuan Shamsul Irwan has only good words to say on her choice of MSU.

Q & A: Ampuan Siti Nurin Syahirah Ampuan Shamsul Irwan

Why computer forensics at MSU?

I’ve always been interested in both information technology and forensics but I had thought of them as separate disciplines. I didn’t know that Computer Forensics is a thing, so when I discovered it to be offered at MSU I went ahead and enrolled. It is listed among the degree programmes eligible for the Brunei Ministry of Education Student Loan Scheme offered on selected degrees and only the Top 100 universities of the world. MSU is on that list.

I discovered MSU at an education exhibition in Brunei. I checked out a number of universities but was drawn to MSU for its location and affordability. On top of that, the academic counsellor at the MSU booth was nice. She showed me a list of my course modules, which I thought were challenging, but I believed I could do it.

How did you land DahPay and how has the internship been?

My lecturers at MSU’s Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering (FISE) passed them my CV and then I received a call from DahPay offering me the position. This was in July 2019 and through the MSU Global Internship Programme (GIP). It has been quite eventful, with a lot of systems and site development to do. I’m polishing my interpersonal skills by getting to know my colleagues. I’ve been here for six months now and finishing my internship in two weeks.

How does the work culture in Brunei differ from your Malaysia experience?

There are similarities in how quite close-knitted members of the workplace tend to be, which is an ideal, family-oriented work culture focused on quality rather than quantity.

Where to from here …

I’d like to secure a job before my August 2020 graduation. The plan is to return to Brunei and find a job there. I might also continue with my Master’s, and probably here, too, at MSU, but it’s still early days to tell.

Nurin Syahirah’s MSU experience thus far …

Among the ups are all the things I thought I could never achieve but did at MSU. For example, I had never thought I could get the straight A's and the occasional B's that I did across all my course modules. I know it’s not all me. I owe some of the success to my parents and lecturers.

Making the Dean’s and President’s lists was a lot of hard work but worth all of it. The academic achievement contributed to my being selected out of all Bruneians studying in Malaysia, for hi-tea with His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei during his visit to Malaysia in March 2019. There were ten of us at one table with him and it was nerve-wracking but exciting.

Her study tips …

Find a study method that suits you best. I personally like to study alone. I make visual aids for each of my course modules. During study week, I would grab a handful of past-year papers and just do questions within a set time-frame.

MSU provides a very accommodating environment in terms of your course modules and class times, which go on for three hours at the max. The buffer period in between classes is well spaced out. You will have time to balance studying with fun and relaxation.

Her word to the wise …

It’s good to achieve but also a challenge to not be comfortable. And it’s easy to be comfortable once you have achieved something. Arrogance will make you lose sight of wanting to keep improving yourself, so don’t get too comfortable.

Advice to future international MSUrians …

It’s not easy to live abroad but don’t be sad. And it’s okay to be homesick but don’t keep returning home every month. Use technology instead and call your parents and family members. Go places in Malaysia, get to know the country and its people. Feel at home living in Shah Alam and studying here at MSU.
