At Management and Science University (MSU), students are nurtured to be well-rounded and hence better prepared for job challenges in the industry. Rushdan, who started his journey at MSU from foundation and progressed to degree, is now a successful Optometrist. Let’s learn more about the Bachelor in Optometry (Honours).

Hi, everyone! My name is Rushdan Kamil Bin Zainal Abidin, I’m an MSU alumnus, currently working at Eyecon Optometry as an Optometrist cum Spoke Consultant.

How my journey at MSU started

Right after I got my SPM result, I accepted an offer to go abroad to study medicine, and at first, I was excited to go. But a week before I go overseas, I hesitated and so did my mother.

She asked me to go to MSU instead and pursue Foundation (Science Biology/Health Science) and I agreed with her choice. I have heard a lot of good things about MSU, and I was confident with my mother’s choice.

My MSU experience

My foundation year was a blast. I was experiencing university life for the first time, organizing events, joining competitions. That was when I first fell in love with MSU. There are so many opportunities to shine and build your character here.

I finished my foundation with good results, and for my degree came the President’s Scholarship. I did not think twice.

I progressed to Bachelor in Optometry (BOP), and that was the best decision I have ever made.

I chose to continue to degree studies at MSU because I am comfortable here. I have a bond with MSU and all the lecturers. And I know MSU can help enrich my future with its industry-embedded learning where students get inputs from lecturers with industrial background, adjunct lecturers from the industry, and international lecturers who can help broaden students’ perspectives.

Building myself

Our beloved President of MSU always encourages MSUrians to be balanced and well-rounded graduates, and I take his words everywhere I go.

I joined a lot of clubs, volunteer activities, and competitions when in MSU to build up my character and sharpen my soft-skills.

During my foundation year, I was in the Music Club, and was appointed as the Director of Performance. My fellow members and I entered many competitions together and that was just the starting point of my co-curricular involvement at MSU.

When I entered my degree year, I joined the Korean Cultural Association and the Sports Club. I was Head Captain of the Korean Cultural Association, and I joined many competitions with the Sports Club. I represented MSU at Malaysia Optometry Students Sports Event (MOSSE) for volleyball, track, and tennis where I managed to bring home a bronze for track and a silver for tennis.

There were many other competitions and activities I joined at MSU and all of them helped sharpen my communication skills, leadership skills, and critical thinking skills, all which are sought-after by potential employees.

A word of advice to others

To be able to survive in the industry, being academically strong is simply not enough. You have to complement that with strong soft-skills as well, and MSU can help you with that.

There are so many opportunities for you to excel here. The lecturers here are super helpful, the facilities are top-notch, and soft-skills development is emphasized  as much as academic excellence.

I built myself at MSU, and so can you!
