Plants prevent pathogenic or parasitic colonization of their tissues through a symbiotic relationship with endophytes, which aid plant health by helping the host plant survive issues such as disease; they colonize the plant tissues themselves, competitively excluding invaders. Management and Science University (MSU) President’s Scholar Arivananthan Kanakasundar studies endophytes from peels of guava and lemon.

The alumnus who had made the Dean’s List five times and the President’s List thrice was awarded the Chancellor’s Gold Medal (CGM) at the 23rd Convocation Ceremony of Management and Science University (MSU) in 2018. Now on the Master in Food Service Technology (by Research) programme at MSU’s School of Graduate Studies (SGS), Arivananthan is looking into the ‘Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Endophytes from Peels of Psidium Guajava and Citrus Limon’; his studies funded in part by the CGM award.

I am curious about the species of endophytes present in the fruit peels of my focus. Their identification at molecular level might present different species with different biomedical properties such as anticancer, antiviral, or even anti-diabetic. I hope such a discovery will contribute to medicine and help mankind,” remarks Ari.

A passion for research led him to the postgraduate journey soon after graduating with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) degree from the programme at MSU’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (Hons). Now in a concurrent career as Administrative/Research & Special Officer to the Deputy Chairman of the Skills Development Fund Corporation (PTPK), at the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia, he is thankful for having hurried on with further study.

“I think it is best to pursue postgraduate education early, when you are young and have fewer commitments. I have to balance my time between work and research, so being on flexible learning mode at MSU really helps,” continues Ari.

Twenty-five research areas are key to the MSU portfolio; with applied, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary forming the main features. Arivananthan’s research may serve the area of Medical Sciences or Applied Health Science as easily as it could Pharmaceutical Design, Traditional and Complementary Medicine, or even Gastronomy and Nutrition; and/or deliver the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Good Health and Wellbeing, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. Working closely with MSU’s International Medical School (IMS) and School of Pharmacy (SPH) besides the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) – all three which make up the Medical and Health Sciences Cluster – as well as with MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC) Private Specialist Hospital, is MyCell; the MSU Clinical Centre of Excellence

Another reason behind Ari’s decision to pursue postgraduate studies is to fulfill his parents’ dream for him to have a Master’s degree in hand. Whilst combining that reason with his passion has for him been easy from the get-go, aided by the President’s Scholarship of Management and Science University (MSU), it still is an opportunity he recommends aspiring to.

“Continue with postgraduate studies to expand your perspective and build up knowledge. Come to MSU for the learning, as well as the vast and various opportunities open to you as an MSUrian.”
