Syahrir Amirul Suib emerged top of his class in both academic and co-curricular at the 25th Convocation Ceremony of Management and Science University (MSU). He first interned, then landed his job, at Sepang Aircraft Engineering; a fully owned Airbus subsidiary providing Aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services for Airbus and ATR commercial aircraft. A career in the field of aviation is now a dream come true for the Aircraft Engineer specializing in non-destructive testing inspections; yet once upon a time that dream had no base from which to take off.

With nary a background knowledge of the physical sciences, Syahrir was going to be scaling the skies from ground zero. Undeterred, he met the challenge head on by registering on the Foundation in Engineering Technology programme at MSU and gave it his all. Soon, with wife, parents, family and extended family comprising lecturers and mentors at MSU rallying him on, he made sufficient grade to switch to MSU’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (DAMT) programme. He graduated DAMT with a near-perfect CGPA, for which he received an Academic Award on his 2018 graduation day.

Yet academics is not all Syahrir is good for. He believes balancing it with the co-curricular to be as important.

“Critical thinking and effective communication are good leadership qualities. I learned teamwork and leadership skills from organizing and participating in campus activities, and honed it as a member of the MSU Student Representatives Council (SRC).”

Determination, dedication, drive, and ecosystemic support may take major credit for his success thus far, but the father of two juggling a demanding career with family life will need a new route for his career-progression plan. Flexible learning would be key, something that can take distance and irregular pockets of time in stride. Returning to his alma mater made the most sensible choice. The Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology alumnus is now pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) degree on flexible mode at MSU.

On his advice to those with similar dreams of venturing into the aviation industry, “Know what you want, what you need to do to get it, and act on it with discipline.”

MSU Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management and Piloting (Honours)

MSU Master of Science in Engineering

MSU Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering
