Management and Science University (MSU) student Shaveena Mei is shooting for the stars.

Having bagged a gold medal at the recent 20th Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle, the Full-Time-Weekend (FTW) student on the Diploma in Management programme at MSU’s Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP) is set to earn her ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

It is a bittersweet win for the Penangite who collected 243.7 points for her State, not only because she had finished eighth in the Malaysia Games of 2018 but also because this shall have been the last SUKMA appearance for the 20-year-old.

“The final at the Subang National Shooting Range was really close, down to the wire, and the Olympics has been my dream. Paris 2024 is a target but it all still depends on my coach’s planning. I also need some time to qualify – participate in designated ISSF competitions, go for the trial selection first, then to the World Cup and onward to the Olympics.”

Shaveena recalls a walk in the park as that which had taken her to the sport.

“I saw this game in the Penang Botanical Gardens where I used to go for exercise when I was 9, but being an only child meant it was no walk in the park convincing my parents to let me pick up firearms. After learning more about the sport, however, they became my avid supporters. I am thankful for the FTW learning mode at MSU, which has been tremendous help throughout, where practice sessions and competitions are concerned.”
