Her interest in endurance sport was sparked six years ago when she fell for the agility displayed by players on horseback at the Royal Selangor Polo Club (RSPC) in Ampang.

Three years later in 2016, she took part in her first competition: SEA’s first qualifying round in the 40km category, held at the Paya Indah Wetlands in Putrajaya. She rode an Arab mixed breed by the name of Commander, and together, they made the Endurance Malaysia qualifiers list for the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

The fourth in a row of five siblings, Nur Qasrina Amani Zakaria ranked only behind top-ranking younger brother Muhammad Yusuf Lukman Zakaria at the Malaysia Endurance Open.

“Being able to skillfully balance training and technique helps an athlete focus on winning,” offered Nur Qasrina.

Landscape and length are the mainstays of endurance sport, she says, with distances ranging from over a hundred kilometres. In Terengganu, sand is her playground; in Argentan, where the qualifying round for the Junior World Endurance Championship in Pisa, Italy was held last year, it was hills and rocks all around.

“My mare, Vlavlaclic de Lap, was inconsistently lame, but it only strengthened my resolve to keep improving. I am determined to take my riding to a higher level through competitions all over the world, and with it, the country’s name.”

She counts being in the same squad once with the Sultan of Terengganu, who won a gold at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, as a sparkling moment in her sporting career. Currently studying Foundation in Business at Management and Science University (MSU), endurance equestrian Nur Qasrina Amani Zakaria has her sights set on a future career in event management.
