SHADDIQ IMMAS
Diploma in Management
Shaddiq Immas is a graduate of MSU College Seremban who aspired to be an entrepreneur when he was just a young boy. After graduating with a Diploma in Management from MSU College Seremban, he is now proud of his achievements with a thriving restaurant business in Pontian Kecil, Johor. Warung Ambeng Enkong which is located at Jalan Taib, Kampung Atap, Pontian Kecil has been operating for 3 years and has a workforce of 5 people. Read on as Shaddip Immas shares his entrepreneurial experience after graduating from MSU College Seremban.
He had already competed in a collegiate level futsal competition during his first week after enrolling at MSU College Seremban in 2015, and had won the competition. His athletic ability shone out, as he represented the college in both futsal and football. He also competed in the MSU Sports Carnival in 2016 and was named the best futsal goalie in the tournament, with MSU College Seremban finishing second. He participates in outdoor activities such as climbing and leisure activities on the shore of Negeri Sembilan in addition to sports.
In an interview with the Shaddiq, he expressed his amazement at becoming active while still in college. When he reflected on his personal life, he realised that he was a person who wanted to be alone and avoid social situations. The school kompang team was his only extracurricular activity, and it was his single greatest achievement while he was there.
Shaddiq shared the reason behind his choice to continue his studies at MSU College Seremban; it was to change his personality to some extent in order to be more independent and to get along well with others. Moreover, he is a student who came from Johor Bahru and has no other relatives in Negeri Sembilan.
His journey as a student was put to the test when he lost his father in his final year of studies at MSU College Seremban. His father who was a construction contractor, breathed his last at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru and thus his mother had to raise her child as a single mother.
We asked him if he wanted to drop out of school and return to Johor to care for his mother. He responded that he needed to fulfil his late father's wish for him to graduate and become an entrepreneur one day. Shaddiq’s mother had also relocated to his grandmother's family home in Pontian, encouraging him to finish his education at MSU College Seremban. That was the driving force behind this student's desire to achieve in both his education and his work. His mother was the motivating force behind his determination to change the family's fate and not give up.
The students are given time to prepare a variety of cuisine and decoration ideas for their project. Each of the projects are aligned regarding the cuisine which include food, beverage and decoration. Soft music and scents are also a crucial part of the decoration which contributes in creating a calm and relaxed environment. The project requires the customer approach element where the students must develop advertisements to reach the public and attract them to the restaurant. Reservations are necessary as it secures the guest to dine in as soon as they arrive. The reservation will ask for the guest’s name, title, number of pax, estimated time of arrival and their contact number as part of their courtesy to get any update from their guest. The project is done 4 times each time with a different cuisine, menu of food and beverages, decorations, and music.
Why does he want to start his own business? Being an entrepreneur had been Shaddiq’s aim since he was a child, but it wasn't until he continued his studies at MSU College Seremban that he realized that it was a worthy goal. He explained to us that becoming an entrepreneur may provide job opportunities and, in turn, provide a source of income for others to help support the family.
"I was tired of being a job seeker, I thought, I'd better be a job creator, maybe I'll be able to help college students open my restaurant franchise in Seremban," he said.
Shaddiq talked about his first business was selling patterned shoes during the entrepreneurship week program at MSU College Seremban when asked about the twists and turns of the effort to become an entrepreneur.
“I still keep pictures of the shoes I sold during the entrepreneur week. Back then, I saw friends selling food and they had higher profits than me, whereas I made the pattern which took me a longer time to do. It seems the food business is more profitable but I wasn't mature back then, and didn't think of opening a restaurant, because I wasn't good at cooking!,” he said.
"In 2018, I continued my interest in selling products by becoming an online seller of hijabs, but I eventually stopped because I was defrauded by a hijab supplier in Kuala Lumpur," he explained. Shaddiq Immas, who is now more cautious in all transactions, noted that the test is frequent in business, and that this is what makes him more mature in every decision he takes.
When asked about other products available in the restaurant he shared how he wants to help others with their own businesses. "Life is only temporary. Maybe today I will help others, but another day I may need help. I put this cupboard in my restaurant for dropship traders or IKS(SME) entrepreneurs in Pontian who want to introduce their products. “You can start from small sales first,” he said.
When asked about the restaurant's other items, he expressed his desire to assist people in starting their own businesses. "Life is merely a passing fancy. Perhaps today I will assist others, but tomorrow I may require assistance. This cabinet is at my restaurant for dropshippers and IKS(SME) entrepreneurs in Pontian who want to promote their products. "You can start with little sales," he advised.
He added that he also started an online business. He is thankful to the lecturers who taught him about E-Commerce who gave him the idea to start a business without having to rent premises. The E-Commerce subject he studied at that time also provided assignments that could be applied even though he had graduated in 2018.
“When I first started studying, I didn't think the assignments I was given could help me become an entrepreneur. This is because we may not be mature and are not yet in the industry. But what the lecturers advised I took in because I thought it was logical, and it turns out that after what I have experienced now, the advice is very useful and that is what I want to share with college students later,” he said. When asked about the impact of the Covid19 pandemic on the business, he expressed how grateful he was that his industry is an essential field and that his business was running as usual. He added saying that, it is very important to adapt during the age of learning, adaptation and concepts to solve an individual’s problems and that is what the alumni holds on to in order to continue succeeding. . “During PKP 1.0 in 2020, I took orders via WhatsApp. That reminded me of when I was a student doing fundraising activities, you must pre-order first. Alhamdulillah, I had a lot of experience while studying. I am now able to use it, especially when all other businesses were affected by the lockdown,” he said regarding the questions related to the Covid pandemic 19.
He hopes the quality of learners at MSU College will continue and that all the students will take all the assignments given seriously because in his opinion, relevant assignments or practical case studies can help students to be more successful in the future. He thanked the college for coming to visit his restaurant and that he would like the cooperation and partnership between the college and him, could further improve the quality of graduates in the future.
