We recently caught up with Mohamad Azmirul Hazny who had just completed his studies for a Bachelor in Investment (Hons). While waiting for his convocation in July 2017, he has started working at the company where he completed his internship. Here is his story.

Q: How did you come across MSU? And what made you apply?
A: I first came across MSU when I was in Form 4. The MSU team came to my school, the English College (Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar) in Johor Bahru, for a collaborative activity with the school’s Cyberkids Club. That first encounter with the team from MSU completely entreated me, laid open a new horizon. Being the youngest of 4 siblings, I had experienced seeing and sending off my older siblings to their campuses – none of which were private schools. So with that first impression of MSU, I decided, why not? Let’s give it a try. Indeed, that was one of the best choices I have made throughout my 22 years of living.

Q: What made you apply for investment management?
A: I wanted a qualification that is highly demanded by the industry. And also because when I was involved with the young entrepreneur club back in school, I came to realize that the person taking care of finance in an organization is the most important person next to the CEO. I took the course with the hope that one day, with a solid background in finance and investment, I will be an accomplished person in my own right, just like how Dato’ Sri Nazir Razak and Tengku Zafrul from CIMB Bank are, very inspiring.

Q: What do you like about the investment management course and which modules are your favourite?
A: What I like most about the course is its program structure, and my favourite modules are in General Accounting and Finance – Econometrics, Quantitative Methods in Finance, and Investment Analysis. They lay out the basic elements to investment, thus ground us in the fundamentals. There is also huge emphasis on critical thinking and numerical reasoning. These sharpen my analytical ability and help me be more precise.

Q: How would you sum up your experience during your 4 years at MSU?
A: I enjoyed every minute! Those four years really made a lifetime of experience. I had been a totally different person when I entered MSU. I was scared and unsure if I would do well at the University but look at me now! I’ve accomplished so much, thanks to all the opportunities provided by MSU. And I’m glad I took up all the challenges that I did. The experience has helped boost my confidence and bring out the best in me.

Q: Did you get involved in any extracurricular activities at the University?
A: Indeed! I was involved with several activities organized by the clubs and associations at MSU. From community services right up to competitions, my co-curricular experience were really fun as well as educational. I was exposed to a lot of different elements and experiences which helped build my character as an individual and as a team player.

Q: What was your proudest moment during your time at MSU?
A: First, when I was selected to be the Valedictorian at my Diploma graduation; then, when I was elected the Vice President of the Students Representative Council (SRC) for the 2014/2015 term; and yet again, when I was elected President of SRC the following year. The opportunities given and the ensuing experience helped build my leadership ability and confidence.

Q: What are some highlights from your time at MSU?
A: There are so many! Among them, receiving the Academic Award of the University, making the President’s List, and being offered a one-semester study in Coventry University under the MSU Global Mobility Program (GMP). It was my first time travelling abroad and an experience I truly cherish.

Q: What advice would you give to an incoming fresher?
A: Do not be perturbed by the dynamic learning environment in MSU. Learning does not happen only in the classroom but everywhere. Venture into a different kind of exposure every time and gain as much experience as you can from all the components in GeMs. Collectively, they will broaden your perspective and mature your way of thinking. Indirectly, your soft skills will be sharpened through the involvement, which helps you move forward.

Get involved! Be involved! Four years passed by too quickly for me. You need to make the most of your time in university. Start volunteering, and join a sports club or a society; MSU has much more to offer than you may think, and the sooner you start your plan the better. Don’t give up! You will have ups and downs throughout your time at MSU but stay focused. Stay positive and things will work out in the end.
