For anything and everything, the time is always now, says this archer, coach, blogger, and photographer on her way to becoming translator and doctor

Nur Najwa Athirah Noor Zari came to the MBBS programme of Management & Science University (MSU) riding on a whole lot of preparatory research into local medical schools. Having weighed on the information she gathered and much helpful advice from students at other private universities studying medicine, she chose the MSU International Medical School (IMS), not least for its excellent facilities.

Thorough and meticulous in her decisions, she still finds time to be many things else despite the demands of academic life in a medical school. She is focused and disciplined – qualities she attributes to her passion for archery.

“Archery trains me to tune out all distractions so I’m completely focused. It gives me the discipline to stick to time limits. I start or finish any activity right on the dot. This way, I have time for all my interests.”

Arrows in her quiver

Nur Najwa Athirah took up archery at age 14 and pursued it to national competitive standard. She took her sport to the next level by coaching. She dreams of one day representing MSU in a major competition. Meanwhile, she serves on the MSU Student Representative Council (SRC), and the archer hits some home truths for fellow MSUrians.

“The MSU open culture gives every student equal access to opportunities and every opportunity to shine. The time is always now to pursue what our heart desires. We should seize our moment of youth and not think too much about how we might look or what others might think of us. We should stop wishing we could. We should just do.”

And life in medical school gives Nur Najwa Athirah plenty to do. She captures lessons and scenes, during mentoring, for example, and writes her thoughts in a blog. Her linguistic abilities extend to a third language, which is Japanese. Having been born and raised in Japan, she loves the language so much that she joined the IMS Meducation Tour to Japan to use it. She aims to reach translator proficiency so she can share the beauty of Japanese literature through her translation. The petite medical student is apparently big on meeting challenges as she is preparing to sit a Japanese language test that is just one level below the highest and she is doing it all by herself.

“Being a doctor is not my ultimate goal. If it is, what then, that’s all for me at 25 when I graduate? Meeting a goal is arriving at one goalpost in a series of them. Being a doctor would be yet another beginning to the next thing coming my way.”
