Management and Science University (MSU) hosted the 3rd edition of the Invention and Innovation Competition for Private Institutions of Higher Education, PERINTIS 2018.

Held at the MSU Chancellor Hall, it was officiated by the Deputy Director General of Higher Education Dr Mohd Nor Azman Hassan.

PERINTIS 2018 carried the theme of Transforming Lives Through Innovation.

Seventeen institutions of higher education took part, along with 10 schools, 4 international exhibitors, and 13 industry partners, with major sponsors Toshiba TEC (M) Sdn Bhd and Karisma Systems (M) Sdn Bhd.

MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid welcomed all to PERINTIS 2018, with special mention of the secondary schools’ inclusion this year as a laudable effort at effective engagement of the younger generation into building their skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

“MSU’s hosting of PERINTIS 2018 is a manifestation of our aspiration to be a leading transformative global university; engaging society through entrepreneurship, research, innovation, industry embedment, and holistic education towards a better future for all. It is an honour to host PERINTIS 2018 as it is a timely response to 21st century call for innovations, and the opportunity jives well with MSU’s own efforts at enriching its research and innovation ecosystem.”

Two categories of competition (University/Industry/International and School) comprises a further eight categories for academics, undergraduates, and researchers (Engineering Technology and Innovation; Health Sciences, Medical, Pharmaceutical; Environmental; Tourism and Hospitality; IT and Telecommunications; Community Development and Social Innovations; Education; New Media, Games and Animation), and four categories for school students (Energy – Creative Energy Applications and Sources; Recycling – Save the Earth; Fun Robotics; and Let’s Innovate – STEM).

A platform for innovations to be introduced and promoted towards commercialization, PERINTIS features exhibition booths open to visitors from among the general public as well as potential manufacturers, investors, funders, distributors, and licensing or IP agencies. Talks by field-expert panelists share information on fundamental research and application, progress, challenges, and discoveries. Topics on applied research and achievements were addressed in PERINTIS 2018 by Toshiba TEC and Karisma Systems, whilst MSU Centre of Excellence for Leadership and Entrepreneurship Advancement Institute (LEAD) and the Department of Human Resource Malaysia respectively supplied an invited speaker and a guest speaker.

Enabling commercialization of research and innovation outputs, of university and school labs alike, PERINTIS also aims to cultivate the cultures of invention and quality.

Integrity and ethics are crucial to maintaining feasibility and quality of research outputs, says PERINTIS 2018 Chairman and MSU Senior Vice-President of Research, Innovation, Technology and Systems Professor Dato’ Dr Md Gapar Md Johar, and we aim to instill such vital values in budding researchers.

Management and Science University (MSU) sent in 49 inventions and innovations to PERINTIS 2018.
