When and where accounting began

The tenth day of November became the International Accounting Day to mark this date in 1494 when the very first record of double entry book-keeping that laid the foundation for business accounting was published. This was the ‘Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionalita’, which translates to 'Everything About Arithmetic, Geometry and Proportion; by Italian mathematician Luca Bartolomeo de Paciolo, who described the use of journals as well as ledgers and highlighted the importance of balancing debit with credit.

The first official celebration of Accounting Day was held in 1972, with the aim of sparking interest in young people to take up accounting as a career. Some believe the original organizer to be the Institute of Management Accountants, whose event, formerly called 'Accounting Career Day', intended to give exposure to the multi-facets of an accounting career. In 1976, the event was renamed 'Accounting Day', with activities that continue to promote the accounting profession through job opportunities offered across public, industry, and government practices, as well as continuing education in accounting.
