Fundamental research is the best route to powerful new medicines, so says evidence. The most transformative among them do seem to have resulted from science driven by curiosity. Created from discoveries through studies seeking to understand a particular biological or chemical process, such medicines are among a biomedical scientist's many contributions to human health.

Rejoicing in her success as a member of a Management and Science University (MSU) award-winning team at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2022 is MSU alumna Dr Syntyche Seow Ling Sing. The group received a bronze medal for their work on the ‘Potential Effects of Beri Hut Supplement towards BPA-Induced Testicular Dysfunction in Rats’.

Biomedical scientists typically perform duties such as preparing medical samples and analyzing data; standardizing drug potency, doses, and methods for mass manufacturing and distribution; and creating as well as testing medical devices. Often reaching their findings through clinical trials, collaborating with physicians, health departments, and industry alike, they develop new treatments and try to prevent health problems.

In her current position as General Manager at Ganofarm R&D Sdn Bhd, Dr Syntyche is responsible for all the company’s operations – formulation, manufacturing, business, and marketing; on top of research and development.

“I could not have done it all without proper time management and support from my family. Balancing business with family is a skill in what I would call myself – a mompreneur.”

Recently certified for Good Clinical Practice by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, she credits her beginning at Management and Science University (MSU) at the time, Kolej Universiti Teknologi & Pengurusan Malaysia (KUTPM).

“The study environment at MSU was good. The lecturers on my Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) programme at the equivalent of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) were qualified and helpful. With my best uni mates being Malays and Indians, it was also an eventful campus life for me.

“The best and most unforgettable experience was of course my convocation; when, having graduated with a first-class 3.91 CGPA, I received an Academic Award. It not only entitled me to a fast-track PhD at the University of Malaya, but also turned into a waiver for my PTPTN loan.”

Believing in teamwork making the dream work, Dr Syntyche Seow Ling Sing is all for collaborations.

“Having signed an MoU with MSU, Ganofarm is now yet another partner of industry offering internship to MSUrians. It’s a way of giving back to my alma mater who has taught me a lot; especially about independence, standing on my own two feet, and taking charge of my life. Let’s keep building each other up through teamwork, on our shared journey to a better future for all.”
