The town of Julau is the capital of a district by the same name in the Sarikei Division of Sarawak, Malaysia. Dominated by the Iban and the Chinese – especially the Fuzhou – it boasts a population of a little over fifteen thousand. Despite 18 millionaires having been produced by Julau’s pepper farming and marketing, sixty percent of the residents have neither piped water nor electricity supply. Their schools and health centres are at least 50 years old, and there is an increase in the number of people with kidney failure. Dr Danielle Valerinna Charles from the Management and Science University (MSU) Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Class of 2023 returns to make a difference.

Dr Dan, as she is popularly known, had left Julau for the first time in her 18 years of life with ambitions of becoming a petroleum engineer. Sarawak is after all, known for its oil reserves of at least 1.2 billion barrels, and she had wanted to travel the world, just like her grandfather; who had been going places, working for Shell. Life and family, however, wished on her another, and being the filial daughter that she is, the teenager flew to Kuala Lumpur and registered herself on the MBBS programme at the International Medical School (IMS) of the MSU Main Campus in Shah Alam Section 13.

“Community engagement is compulsory on the MBBS programme at MSU, and I fell in love with volunteerism. It is a humbling experience that allows me to see the world in all its different ways. Volunteering connects me to community, provides a platform for me to give back what I have gained from my education and hone important skills – clinical, communication, problem solving, project planning, management as well as organization. It stretches my wings farther than I could have imagined, inspires me to make an impact. I can’t wait to do better and give more.”

The former president of the MSU Student Representatives Council (SRC) 2022-2023 had also served as president to the MSU Environmental Club. An exco to the MSU International Medical School (IMS) Association (IMSA), she also served as Student Empowerment Exco to the National Student Representatives Council (MPPK). Dr Danielle Valerinna represented Management and Science University (MSU) on the Ministry of Higher Education programme Jelajah Aspirasi Mahasiswa Antarabangsa to the United Kingdom, France, and The Netherlands; and was selected to lead as Programme Director in the UNESCO Malaysia session at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Her well-roundedness as a student and a leader led to her being awarded the Chancellor Gold Medal at the 31st Convocation Ceremony of Management and Science University.

“Volunteering, be it for humanity or nature, will always be close to my heart. I hold on to a principle of shining together in promising to continue contributing as an MSU alumna. We can and will do great things for mankind and the environment. We shall shine together.”
