Final-year Diploma in Medical Assistant student Wardena Ningseh Abdul Malek looks up to the activist and philanthropist known to the world as the legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

A dedicated volunteer and first aider since primary school, participating in the Ministry of Education’s Young Doctor co-curricular programme, she takes to heart the boxer’s philosophy on the service you do for others as being the rent for your room on Earth.

“I chose the Diploma in Medical Assistant (DMA) programme for the unparalleled job satisfaction you get from the immediate visible impact you can make to human life.”

Believing the reach of medicine to extend beyond physical symptoms and biomedical reports, and of the need to make yourself present for the injured person, Wardena’s career wishlist includes air-emergency medical service and international humanitarian missions of disaster relief. She professes that she cannot bear to see people in pain. If she senses a medical need or painful suffering in progress, she feels compelled to assist. Her most memorable emergency aid was to a little girl who had choked and fallen unconscious.

“I had learned the reviving technique only theoretically up to that point, so it felt great to be able to act on it. I plan to progress to a degree programme in Emergency Medicine after I graduate, and continue sharpening my skills. It is important to keep growing. If you're just hanging in there, you haven't reached your limit.”

Wardena Ningseh had been the 2018-2019 club president of the University’s Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) as well as the MSU Medical Team leader at the university events International Songket Run 2018 and 2019, Sports United Championship (SUCA) 2018 and 2019, and Bear-A-Thon 2019. She was on standby as the MSU team’s personal medical first aider at the national futsal league and the institutions of higher learning football league meets. The recipient of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) Best Student and Dean’s List awards is a regular backup first aider at MSU’s convocation ceremonies. She had discovered MSU through her sister Evana Ningseh Abdul Malek, now Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP) alumna from the Bachelor in Human Capital Management (Hons) programme.

“Experiential learning is such a great teacher, and MSU is very much industry embedded. Community engagement is a culture at MSU, a great platform on which to gain compelling experiences in the society at large which we will eventually serve. Not only do these help with employability enrichment, there is also the MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC) Specialist Hospital, which has provided me with a job opportunity right on campus.”
