According to a United Nations report, 10 million hectares of forest are destroyed annually and close to 90 percent land are deforested for agricultural expansion. Management and Science University (MSU) College (MSUC) Seremban rises to a governmental call for 100 million trees to be planted in Malaysia between 2021 and 2025 with a Go Green campaign.

Taking place at the Edu-Eco-Tourism Centre in Port Dickson’s Sungai Menyala PD Forest, the SDG campaign organized by MSUC Seremban Student Representatives Council (SRC) in collaboration with the Negeri Sembilan Forestry Department saw 130 students and 20 members of staff participating.

Officiated by MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ WIra Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, it also had the State Forestry Director and the Forest Development Department Deputy Director in attendance.

Merbau (Malacca teak) was the chosen tree. One of the tallest in the tropical region, the towering hardwood capable of growing up to a height of 50m had in 2019 been announced as the national tree symbolizing integrity in sustainable management of Malaysian biodiversity. With the flora conservation effort by MSUC Seremban set to be an annual event, Phase 1 of MSUC Go Green 2022 planted 250 saplings of the gigantic tree.

The day’s other activities included hiking and trekking in the Recreational Forest of Sungai Menyala, and colouring with indigenous kids from the Orang Asli kindergartens of Pasir Panjang and Pelebar villages.
