Selangor is home to 74 aboriginal villages; comprising 23, 16, 15, 11, and 9 perkampungan Orang Asli in the districts of Kuala Langat and Klang, Hulu Selangor, Sepang, Gombak and Petaling, and Hulu Langat. One of them, Kampung Sungai Dua Pulau Ketam in the Klang district, was visited last Ramadan by Management and Science University (MSU) president Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

Close to the One Fathom Bank Lighthouse (Rumah Api Permatang Sedepa) in the Straits of Malacca off the State of Selangor coast, Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) is located 20-30 nautical miles from its closest international neighbor Tanjung Balai in Indonesia. Recording only 13 households and 33 occupants in 2009, the tiny island has limited resources. The MSU team led by Professor Tan Sri Dr Shukri arrived with provisions.

The community engagement programme with B40 groups of society by MSU’s Student and Career Development (SCD) Department had begun for the residents of Pulau Ketam in 2019. COVID put a temporary stop to it, before the programme was picked up again a year later in 2021. The Ramadan 2023 visit mid-April by the MSU team provided basic necessities comprising groceries and personal hygiene products to 21 families.

Initiatives towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by Management and Science University led to MSU’s inaugural Times Higher Education Impact Rankings in 2019.
