At the core of many diseases is obesity; a problem largely evolved over cravings for sugar, fat, and salt. The cascading effects on human health and medical costs can be catastrophic, such that exercise should be mandated. Physical activity proves to be good for health and a long life, whereas lack of it may cause as many fatalities as are annually owed to smoking. Aiming to build a sports institution and promote a healthy lifestyle is Bachelor in Education (Physical Education and Health) (Hons) student Mathavan Thiyagarajah.

Twice scoring a silver at the MSU Sports United Championship (SUCA) 2019, Mathavan, who also received the MSU President’s Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship (PALS) 2019, is a high achiever in the academic and the co-curricular alike. Whilst he has made the School of Education and Social Sciences (SESS) Dean’s List thrice, he has also bagged awards for Best Research and Most Active – respectively at the SESS Research Colloquium and GEmS Night 2019.

As Activity Exco on the MSU Student Representatives Council (SRC) 2019/2020, Mathavan led the MSU Extreme Youth Club as President from 2017 to 2019, the Abseilturous 2017 and the Extreme Challenge 2018 as Programme Director, and the Water Tubing 2019 as Assistant Director. He also took on assistant leadership of the MSU My Mountain Project 2019 and the MSU Myday Convoy 2019. Sharing his love of outdoor recreation and adventure is his alumnus brother, Bachelor in Computer Forensic (Hons) from the MSU Class of 2019, Shamelan Thiyagarajah.

“The campus being a culturally diverse community, with students coming in from over forty countries, MSU has been my platform to develop employable skills and become a competent, well-rounded graduate. I'm thankful for the University’s support and the opportunities I've been given to serve my fellow students. If you’re already here as an MSUrian or intending to be one soon, there’s plenty of those opportunities. You should grab them all.”
