It has been seventeen months since the COVID pandemic began, disrupting routine global socio-economic order with deafening repercussions along its path. Never had issues on public health take precedence over everything else since the Spanish flu of 1918. For what is clear and more than a year later, it looks more likely that COVID is here to stay and we have to pretty much adapt to living with it.

Total COVID eradication is a far cry; elimination seems the better option.  Longstanding global problems have remained, even exacerbated in the case of the marginalized. Response to the menace must not only be swift and decisive but also united in purpose for a return to some form of normalcy.

Among the range of COVID-19 management efforts initiated at MSU is the Partnership for COVID Elimination or PaCE. Spearheaded by MSU Foundation Yayasan MSU (YMSU), jointly with Management & Science University (MSU) and MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC), PaCE is a comprehensive initiative to support flattening the COVID curve.

A five-pillared programme comprising awareness campaign, vaccination drive, sustainable development goals (SDGs), community engagement, and multi-disciplinary research, PaCE plots a possible path forward to a better future for all.

A foremost component of PaCE is an initiative to raise awareness on the general understanding and managing of COVID-19. Also focused on is the importance of vaccination in reducing COVID-related deaths and disrupting the disease’s progression. A series of knowledge sharing by public health experts on webinars and YouTube Live will run right up to December; with Datuk Dr Rohaizat Yon, Datuk Dr Christopher Lee, and Dato’ Dr Khalid Ibrahim – all who have been directly involved since the breakout of the pandemic in Malaysia – in the lineup of speakers. Intensive campaigns across MSU, MSU College nationwide and MSUMC communities will be efforts hoped to lead to increased awareness at the national level.

A second pillar to PaCE involves the setting-up of PPVs; by increasing the vaccination capacity of MSU Medical Centre and MSU Chancellor Hall as government-appointed PPVs to ProtectHealth and the District Health Centre (PKD), and the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT). Beginning March 17th this year, Private Specialist Hospital in Shah Alam MSUMC has vaccinated more than 30,000 – including medical personnel in the front lines, senior citizens, and the differently abled.

The introduction of PaCE supports Malaysia’s National Immunization Programme (PICK) and the participative roles of MSU and MSUMC in the Industry Immunization Programme (PIKAS). The role of Higher Education Institution Vaccination Centre has been facilitated by a collaboration between the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia. Vaccination administration and capacity from a thousand a day to 4,500 are being expanded via drive-through vaccination kiosks and HomeCare vaccination.

A third, equally important pillar is the corporate sponsors programme. An undertaking demanding substantial resources, PaCE aims to raise support from all quarters – industry, the public, alumni, students, and staff alike. Echoing the recently launched MSU Cares Fund at the start of Malaysia’s Movement Control Order (MCO) 3.0, MSU yet again has the B40 group in mind. Close to four hundred alumni, students and staff volunteers have been gathered through MSU Cares to distribute contributions and goods to those economically impacted by the pandemic.

PaCE's fourth pillar is to attain inclusive Good Health and Well-Being as well as Partnership for the Goal in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 17. This will see MSU Cares volunteer engagement of the most affected group among the nation’s displaced communities. Given MSU’s sterling reputation with regards to SDG projects such as the MSU Sg Damansara National River Trail, encouraging support is anticipated from industry as well as university partners.

A final, fifth pillar is MSU's research initiatives in response to the impacts of COVID-19. Corporate-sponsored funding for areas of research would include, for example, public health issues, socio-economy, and utilization of technology. Multidisciplinary research on COVID-19 will be undertaken by both researchers and students alike, with grants to be made available across MSU Centres of Excellence; among which are MyCell or MSU Clinical Centre of Excellence, MSUiCARE or MSU Centre of Excellence for Vision and Eyecare, and MyCAM or MSU Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Underlying sponsorships of these research activities, extending beyond such contributions' financial face value, are wholesome collaborative efforts to contribute as a caring community.
