Convo-26 President Award recipient Hani Qistina Dayana Avelino S. Cavan @ Mohd Fadil describes her three years on the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) programme at Management and Science University (MSU) as an extraordinary experience with extraordinary lecturers and friends.

“One of my particular favourite was the mentoring sessions. Hanging out with both mentor and friends in fun activities such as bowling and potluck, what’s not to like? And for group assignments, MSU Library and Resource Centre was our place. This may sound nerdy but the astounding book collection there is what endears the MSU library especially to me, being a student of medical laboratory technology who needs various references from authentic sources. My other favourite lepak places were Fresh Bake and The Hub.”

Enjoying baking cookies and cakes herself during her free time, the alumna from MSU Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) also likes joining marathons, visiting new places, and listening to music of various genres. She advises wise time management, because with planning and scheduling she gets to spend weekends with her loved ones, she says; going out to the mall or watching movies, and even road-trips sometimes, after the final papers of semester exams.

“My family is my greatest inspiration. I really want to be the best version of me and to keep achieving more in future so they can be proud of me. All my awards – Dean’s list, President’s list, and now a scholarship from the President Award – are for them.”

With two older sisters and an older brother, Hani Qistina Dayana is the youngest among four siblings. She came to MSU having attended primary school in Pahang and secondary school in Klang. Academics take you higher with knowledge and skills, she says, but soft skills are equally important; they take you farther in terms of your employability.

“MSU’s GEmS helped me improve my communication skills, social skills, entrepreneur skills, and many more. Among the GEmS activities I participated in were visiting the Orang Asli, learning Korean via the Korean Cultural Association, and competing in badminton. As a medical student, I also had the opportunity to attend IMR (Institute for Medical Research) Open Day and to visit Shah Alam Hospital, where I gained useful exposure and also the experiences shared by staff members working there as medical lab technologists. GEmS activities really help you avoid study burnouts.”

Taking the opportunity of the interview to thank her lecturers, Hani Qistina describes them.

“My lecturers on DMLT inspired me to achieve great heights. They gave their all in passing on knowledge. I always asked a lot of questions and they were all answered, never ignored. They also gave me very good advice on internship, bachelor programmes that I could progress to (she has chosen Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours)), and future plans. Alhamdulillah, success came my way many times at MSU. I thank all my lecturers, with much gratitude.”

To MSUrians present and potential, she advises the same tips of her practice.

“Ask a lot of questions and never stop asking. Have a good study plan and believe in yourself. Don't give up when things go down or you didn’t get the grade or pointer you wanted. There's no success without failure along the way. Never be over-confident and always be grateful to God. And stay humble with your every achievement.”
